CA Inc., the Islandia-based high-tech company formerly known as
Computer Associates, has joined industry leaders, including Fujitsu,
HP, IBM and Microsoft, in proposing new, standardized specifications
that will allow large organizations to integrate databases more easily,
the group announced Monday.
The consortium, known as the Configuration Management Database
Federation, was formed in April 2006 and published a white paper
earlier this year describing how data from multiple sources can be
combined into single databases.
"This makes it easier to keep track of changes to an IT environment," a release from the group said. "It also helps organizations better understand the impact of changes they make to the IT environment."
Configuration management databases "have become one of the central elements of entreprise IT management, so a standards-based approach to this critical functionality is necessary and valuable," said Helge Scheil, chief architect of CA's Business Service Optimization Business Unit, in a statement Monday. "CA is pleased to collaborate with other industry leaders to advance the state-of-the-art around CMDBs while lowering the cost of adoption."
The federation plans to submit the new recommendations to one of a number of international bodies for possible adoption as a universal standard, CA spokesman Bob Gordon said. He said the group has not yet decided which body will review the draft.
