EMS Satcom Implements Unique Solution Enabling Distributed Source Code Development and Business Continuity.
Ottawa and San Ramon, CA August 16, 2007 EMS Satcom (Nasdaq: ELMG), a
leading provider of satellite-based voice, data and video
communications solutions and WANdisco, a leading provider of
distributed software development solutions, today announced that EMS
Satcom has implemented WANdisco for CVSNT to support their globally
distributed software development efforts.
EMS Satcom has software development sites in the United Kingdom, Canada
and the US. Prior to implementing WANdisco for CVSNT, poor WAN
performance between these sites significantly hindered developer
productivity. “It took hours for our developers in the UK to checkout
large files from our server in Canada. Checkins and other write
operations were just as slow. If we lost the network, the whole
process had to be restarted. We had no recovery capability at all,”
said Nigel Silverthorn, Engineering Manager, EMS SATCOM UK.
“We now have the ability to coordinate work between our UK and Canadian
sites in real time, and we didn’t lose any data or down time during the
recent record flooding in UK which affected our Tewkesbury site”
commented Nigel.
Widespread flooding occurred throughout the United Kingdom in June and
July 2007, killing a number of people, affecting thousands of
businesses, tens of thousands of homes and further affected up to a
million people. Estimated damages on 23 July 2007 alone were over £2
billion. Tewkesbury was completely cut off with no road access, parts
of the town were under around 3 feet of water and flood waters entered
Tewkesbury Abbey for the first time in 247 years.
By implementing WANdisco EMS Satcom were not affected by the worst
flooding Gloucestershire had seen in 60 years. WANdisco’s unique
network architecture does not rely on any centralized servers that can
quickly become a central point of failure. If a server goes down
because of flooding developers automatically fail over to other servers
on the network which may even be on another continent.
After implementing WANdisco, EMS Satcom found that checkins and
checkouts of files that had taken several hours in the past were
completing at LAN-speed in a matter of minutes, or in some cases
seconds. At the same time, EMS Satcom’s servers in the UK and North
America stay in sync in real-time.
“Implementing WANdisco not only protects our intellectual property but
now our developers in the UK and North America work as if they are one
team at the same location. Everything gets done at LAN-speed, and our
source code repositories stay in sync. Problems are found and fixed as
they occur, so there’s significantly less QA and rework than we’ve had
in the past. Our development cycles are at least 50% shorter as a
result. With EMS Satcom's recent acquisition of DSpace Pty Ltd,
discussions are already under way to further extend the WANdisco
advantage to a third development site in Australia" said Nigel.
“We are delighted that EMS Satcom has joined a growing list of
companies who see terrific value for money by implementing WANdisco,”
said David Richards, President and CEO of WANdisco. “Not only do our
customers experience dramatic improvements in network performance and
developer productivity but we also protect their invaluable
intellectual property even when natural disasters such as earthquakes
or flooding occur.”
