vanderbilt medical centerThe July Edition of the Configuration Management Journal focuses on CM Planning. The CM Journal is available online at http://www.cmcrossroads.com/cmjournal.In CM Planning (as with any planning process) I have found that there often seems to be a critical flaw that occurs when even though you have a plan you don't follow the plan. What's the point? In my other life as a SCUBA Instructor, I always try to instill in the minds of new divers that you should always, "Plan your dive and then dive your plan!" It really is the best way to ensure that you will be safe and enjoy the experience too. That sounds like pretty sound advice for configuration management planning too. It helps keeps divers alive maybe it will keep more development projects alive. Gartner studies show that less than 15% off all application development projects are ever completed on time. Most organizations set out with a plan or at least intend to, but I think where it all falls apart is sticking to the plan. So how does it work where you work. GOT PLANS? If you do, do you stick to them? And if you end up dropping the plan, what kinds of things affect that decision? Share your thoughts in the forums www.cmcrossroads.com/option,com_smf/Itemid,180/topic,8725.new.html If you are looking for a decent sample plan there's one in the CM Wiki in the templates section www.cmcrossroads.com/cgi-bin/cmwiki/view/CM/CmTemplates And, if you have one you'd like to share go ahead and add it there. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Configuration Management Journal and as always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions. Feel free to post your Letters to the Editor in the forums at www.cmcrossroads.com/letters or send your letters to the editor to me directly.
