FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly
Security Appliance Tracker, appliances are quickly becoming the platform
of choice in the secure content management (SCM) gateway market. The
addition of SCM appliances to IDC's Security Appliance Tracker provides
a more comprehensive view of the security appliance market.
The Messaging Security and Web Security segments of SCM are following
the same evolution of the threat management market, from software to
appliance form factor. Given the fact that security appliances can lower
costs, ease administrative overheads, facilitate management, consolidate
support, scale efficiently, and integrate multiple security technologies
into a single platform, their success is not surprising in the SCM
market.
"There is an increasing need for integration between gateway SCM
technologies in order to increase overall security effectiveness as well
as reduce the cost and time associated with managing point products,"
said Jon Crotty, research analyst at IDC. “IDC
believes security appliances will continue to be the platform of choice
for integrating various Web and messaging security technologies.”
The worldwide SCM appliance market reached a new milestone at the close
of 2006, with more than 80 thousand units shipped worldwide, totaling
$584 million in factory revenue. Among the vendors currently being
tracked by IDC are, 8e6 Technologies, Ahnlab, Barracuda Networks,
Borderware, Fortinet, IronPort (now part of Cisco), McAfee, Mirapoint,
Secure Computing, SonicWALL, St. Bernard Software, and Trend Micro.
The total worldwide market for SCM appliances in the first quarter of
2007 was led by IronPort with 14.27% market share. IronPort has shown
strong growth over the past few quarters. Secure Computing remains in
second place and Barracuda finished a close third. The 1Q07 SCM
appliance market was the strongest ever with worldwide factory revenue
reaching over $175 million.

Although unit counts and revenues for standalone firewall/VPN appliances
have been slow over the past few quarters, other sub-markets such as UTM
and Intrusion Detection and Prevention continue to see steady growth.
The IPS market posted 31% growth compared to the first quarter of 2006
with factory revenue reaching $193 million. IDC believes this market
will continue to see healthy growth rates as internal threats continue
to proliferate. Cisco remained number one, followed by TippingPoint in
second place.
The UTM market posted 28% year-over-year growth with factory revenue
reaching $271 million, showing that customers are interested in taking
advantage of the additional security features that these appliances
provide. Fortinet remained number one in this sub-market, with Cisco
finishing in second place.
IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker provides the
