Company's Coimbatore Operations Center Appraised Against Latest Model

TEANECK, N.J., Dec. 20 -- Cognizant (NASDAQ:CTSH), a leading provider of IT services, announced today that the Company's software development and delivery center in Coimbatore, India has become the first in the world to be successfully appraised at Maturity Level 5 of the latest version 1.2 of Capability Maturity Model(R) Integration (CMMI) through the latest version 1.2 of Standard CMMI Appraisal Methodology for Process Improvement (SCAMPI). The appraisal was conducted by an independent SEI Authorized High Maturity Lead Appraiser from KPMG between November 27 and December 8, 2006. CMMI Maturity Level 5 is the highest level of process maturity that independently verifies an organization's capabilities to continuously enhance its processes through incremental and innovative process and technological improvements. CMMI Maturity Level 5 affirms the organization's ability to statistically manage the sub-processes in order to achieve process and business objectives.

"We are very proud of this achievement, as it further reinforces our commitment to continuous process maturity and innovation that enhances the value of solutions we provide to our customers," said R Chandrasekaran, Managing Director and President of Global Delivery, Cognizant. "This independent appraisal is a clear indication that Cognizant can deliver the highest levels of quality to customers through continuous process improvements in every location that we expand to globally. This new capability accentuates our customer-centric culture by providing greater transparency to our customers from project execution and enhanced structuring of the decision- making process to metrics management."

"Continuous improvement has become a way of life for Cognizant's Coimbatore Center," said Mr. V Sankaran, KPMG - SEI Authorized SCAMPI Lead Appraiser.

"This center has consistently adapted to various quality initiatives and emerging industry best practices, keeping value addition to customers in mind. The leadership team at Cognizant has consistently demonstrated commitment towards superior process and quality. The greatest strength of the organization is the empowerment and opportunity to implement process improvement initiatives by associates at all levels, ensuring that high maturity practices will sustain for the long term. With their focus on continuous process improvements, Cognizant Coimbatore has successfully transitioned to the latest version of the model, CMMI v1.2."

Cognizant's Coimbatore Center has developed a unique operational model that integrates best practices such as CMMI, lean manufacturing and six sigma concepts to improve operational efficiency and productivity. To reach this level, Cognizant demonstrated structured process improvement and innovations categorized under Efficiency aiders, People aiders, Process aiders and Productivity aiders with a goal of achieving substantial process and business benefits.

The Carnegie Mellon(R) Software Engineering Institute (SEI) had released the latest version 1.2 of CMMI model and latest version 1.2 of Standard CMMI Appraisal Methodology for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) in August 2006. Subsequently, SEI authorized only a selected few High Maturity Lead Appraisers (HMLA) after undergoing a stringent evaluation criteria. The CMMI Level 5 appraisal for Cognizant was carried out by Mr. V Sankaran, SEI Authorized High Maturity Lead Appraiser from KPMG.

Don´t believe ANY propaganda about Cognizant´s CMMI level 5 achievements ….Here´s WHY...

TRUTH is Cognizant committed FRAUD on SEI by cheating and obtained SEI-CMMI level 5 in version 1.2 at COIMBATORE center in 2006 just for BRANDING to be first in the IT world to be assessed in that new version.
I was heading Delivery Assurance Group at Cognizant Coimbatore in 2006 and had seen the DRAMA first-hand enacted by Cognizant senior management in SHAMELESSLY coercing and conniving with the Lead assessor Mr. V.Sankaran of KPMG in fooling the IT world for CMMI level 5 - when it did not even have CMMI level 4 capability at Coimbatore center!!!.

V.Sankaran, the lead assessor from KPMG shared a close rapport with Mathrubutham Hariharan (who spear-headed the FRAUD initiative intentionally) - heading Global Quality at Cognizant as Assistant Vice President. The Coimbatore Cognizant Center Head - Vishnu Potty, is a nice gentleman, who was worried about how Cognizant Coimbatore was going to achieve the milestone since he was well aware that center was well below par at that time -he had participated in Cognizant Chennai? CMMI level 5 assessment earlier. In this bid, there was a pre-assessment by V.Sankaran who honestly pointed out glaring GAPS in level 4 and level 5 process areas. Then started the DECEPTION and LIES perpetrated and delegated to Managers - who enthusiastically presented some trumped up artifacts and hoodwinked lead assessor about and practices containing details that were not done at COIMBATORE center. Mathrubhutam Hariharan contended that Organisation Innovation & deployment practices (of level 5) carried out at Chennai could be borrowed and shown as done at Coimbatore. About Organisational Process Performance process area(of level 4), work had not even started and was to be done later at Chennai. When the lead assessor V.Sankaran managed to point out flaws in a doctored report - an enthusiastic Manager had the presence of mind to openly LIE in the forum to save her face - stating that there was revision to the contract. V.Sankaran willingly allowed himself to be coerced with some friendly persuasion from Mathrubhutam Hariharan. In the next couple of months followed the massive exercise of CMMI training to puzzled Cognizant COIMBATORE employees by experienced staff from Chennai, Needless to say - there were complaints, late working hours, creation of documents and of course DOCTORING of documents/artifacts. Majority of the employees were pissed-off at being overloaded in such a small time-frame. As regards process awareness and maturity, baring a few, others did not even have any clue regarding what documents were prepared and why - they were just blindly copying and altering artifacts from a standard well reviewed project. I had a laugh during assessment on some FUNNY and AWKWARD incidents!!! - one senior associate, (who was a six sigma black belt) on being asked to explain project processes during interview to assessment team - blurted out that people were just coming to her and asking her what to do and that they had no clue whatsoever. Interview comments form input to the CMMI assessment report to be submitted to SEI by CMMI lead assessor and assessment team!!!. Of course, these were filtered out to provide a professional CMMI assessment report - but some assessment team members could not help chuckle at the maturity level of interviewees regarding what to tell and what not to tell in presence of an external assessor!!!. Thanks to our effort and largely conniving co-operation of our lead assessor from KPMG - V.Sankaran, Cognizant COIMBATORE was assessed at CMMI level 5 in version 1.2. If Cognizant has VALUES like honesty,Truth etc - they exist in code of conduct on paper - always foresaken in practice.

Soon after, Cognizant COIMBATORE center head - Vishnu Potty got double promotion as Vice-President. And so did others .....
I had spoken out initially against rushing into maturity levels through short-cuts and was promptly shunted out of Coimbatore!!! .....
