(My comments mostly apply to Git)

You make some good points.

I'd suggest that scalability has already been proved with a) Support of the Linux Kernel (a large project with many many contributors) and b) GitHub (Many many small projects and thousands of users). There have been stories that Git has problems with very large file sets, however I have loaded 2G in 100K files with no real problem.

Possibly the easiest way to back up developers word is to insist a second repo is kept on enterprise storage that is backed up. A commit hook can push to their second repo after every local commit. Call this the DR repo rather than the public repo as it will contain *all* of the developers cruft. I might try this as an experiment.

The point about ease of use is a potentially big issue for both end users and CM administrators. We still have limited documentation on accepted and recommended best practices for workflows with Git. This means it is hard for new groups to adopt Git with a ready made "templates". Based on my experience with organisations who try and adopt a new CM tool and processes it can be surprisingly difficult to make the mental gear shift. I think this will make Git seem 'too hard'. Getting budget for consultants and assistance could also be a problem as Git will probably have been sold as a low cost implementation already. NB There are probably three sources of information on Git best practice that I know of. The books ProGit by Scott Chacon (http://progit.org/), Version Control with Git by Loeliger (http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596520137/) which has far less on process and workflow; and hunting through various blogs on the internet (My delicious Git bookmarks may be of some assistance http://delicious.com/alecclews/git).

There is another CM issue as well. How does Git (and other DVCS) tools fit into the ALM landscape? In particular ticket/task systems and release/deployment processes. There are solutions and approaches -- but they still need more work. NB I say that because I figure that a distributed VC needs a distributed ticket system and they are just appearing.

Does not seem a new trend to me. We have long split it into a central CM admin group that run the tools and project based CMs (aka integrators/builders) that do the builds and tagging. Both could be called CM engineers. But they are quite different skill sets.

With Harvest 7.1 we rely heavily on the hsync command and agents for our code deployment but we have always had issues with the agents not starting or 'going down' after starting so we have come to not trust our agents. I check every morning to see that all of our agents are up. Mostly our issues are with our Windows agents.

Does anyone use agents with SCM r12 with hsync? Have you found it to be more reliable? Or is there another way you would recommend to deploy code?

Thanks,

Yeah I do agree on your point Drew :) but not everyone gets a choice of getting the processes off their heads. In our case the processes are decided across the organisation and we are asked to follow those. And in those cases we do not have an option but to try and make it work better for us. Customize it according to our teams and start using it to make things better for us !

We have Informatica PowerCenter 8.6.1 and have been using it extensively. However, for the source control we have been using ClearCase as an additional tool. For example after mapping or integrating the data , we are exporing it as an xml file in to ClearCase and then checking it in. Subsequest changed files (xml files) are checked as next version to have the source control. This procedure involves exporting and importing between PowerCenter and ClearCase and is a tedious process.

01 Is there versioning control available within PowerCenter 8.6.1? If it is available what needs to be done to turn it on? Is a special license required for this?

02 If versioning is not available in 8.6.1 , in what version is it available? What is the procedure for updating 8.6.1 to that version and what are the licensing costs (if any) involved with that?

Any information regarding this is highly appreciated.

We are at present following the tedious procedure for export import and would like to move in to thre more robust built in versioning tool within PowerCenter.

Any information regarding this is highly appreciated.

OK, I see. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't think that what you are looking for can be done out of the box - it would take some scripting.

There is a technical explanation to why your seemingly straightforward question may not be trivial to answer: When AccuRev computes whether an issue is "in" a given stream, it does not really use the history of the issue (as in following pointers/references). Rather, it infers it from analyzing the ancestry of the elements of the issue. Thus, an issue can be "in" a stream even though you never explicitly promoted that particular issue to the stream (but the elements - or later versions of them - were brought there by e.g. promoting other issues).

So an issue can potentially be "in" any number of streams, so you would at least have to provide a list of potential streams to limit the scope of your query.

Having said that, I realize there is a way: If you turn on the 'old' Issue integration, it will give you a chronological list of all transactions that were promoted using the Issue. It can be found in the field "Affected Files" (which really should be called "Affected Transactions"...) and by using that, you should be able to get the answers you need. We actually use both integrations as well, because the old one does give us the history that the 'Change Package' feature doesn't (although we rarely use the info.)

Hope it helps,

/Tomas

The procedure is:

If the task name to delete is: TEST#12345, start a synergy database and run:

ccm query -t task -n *12345 -f %objectname

This will give you a 4 part objectname of the task.

Then run:

We have an old version of PVCS running on a Solaris box. Recently, the Solaris system was moved to a new location, got a new IP address, and when plugged in, the hard drive went up in smoke. Fun times. Anyway, when the smoke cleared, we decided to network mount the data and life was good until we tried to use the PVCS Builder application. The version control commands seem to work ok (get, vlog, etc). When I try to do a build, I get:
license notification: user ID not authorized
license notification: user ID not authorized
Build: license notification: not configured to access network files

As far as I can tell, my user is authorized (according to accessdb.txt).

Any ideas? I know this is ancient history stuff, but needed for legacy work.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Tomas,

I tried this only through the GUI, so I missed the option to override the crosslink...
If this is possible from the CLI - it looks much better, although I believe that it is needed in the GUI as well...

Hi,
I have the problem with Windows 64 bits and the HDBSETUP program. When CA SCM create the repository or create the ODBC, i have the problem.

But I can connect with SQLplus. and create a ODBC with the oracle driver in Windows.

Give everyone access to perform transitions. Then restrict every OTHER transition by setting the "Group Restrictions" to limit their availability. I have no idea if this will solve your problem since I don't know what other restrictions on transitions you need.

andham,

I think this might be your best solution.

If I understood the question correctly it was not related to standards for the implementation of CM processes but about the EIA 836 which is a standard on Configuration Management Data Exchange and Interoperability. It used to be in the old times the MIL-STD-2549 which GEIA tried to convert into a Schema for CM. I have not seen any implementation of this standard. When I looked at it in 2001 I found the idea useful especially when you want to implement a CM Tool or data exchange mechanisms.

I am using MKS client in windows and server in linux.

I create a project, a sandbox and add some files to it sandbox.

When I open the "create project" window inside MKS Client, and navigate inside my folders I see the project directories and the files that I add to my sandbox in the project root.

After this I try to locate this same folders and files in my linux server, but I didn't find anything.

Someone knows why it happens ?!

Tks !!!

Hello !

I'm adding members to a sandbox but I'm in doubt if I'm doing it write.

I create a project and then a sandbox...

I try to populate the sandbox, but a mesage appears saying that the files need to be in the sandbox folder (is it write?!)

How can I do a sandbox point to a folder on my server and not on my local machine and if I add a member from local, how can I share it with other users ?

Hope someone can help me !

Tks !

I agree with the 'take the JCL and convert it to Endevor Processor'. Most JCL will convert from Standard JCL to Endevor Processor code fairly easily.

We base new processors on existing processors (for the Endevor related environment variable resolutions and standard setup config info) and cut in the required JCL to form the new processor.

It should be any other user on the system except for root. The RWP server uses the login info for the system. If it is a local /etc/passwd file then that is where it will get the info.

Are you on Windows or *NIX? If you are on Windows you can use the report builder tool. If on *NIX you could write a script using cleartool lsco -user...etc. I would not create a trigger unless you want to exclude that user from doing anything and if that were the case you could achieve that through permissions.

If you are using UCM it is best to use the deliver tool. The merge manager is still the same but I have seen issues crop up with hlinks when using findmerge versus the deliver option.

Run a checkvob -hlinks and this should tell you if CC thinks there are any broken links.
