That Reduces Cost of Managing Custom Business Application Configurations

Innovative solution removes blind-spots left by today¹s application dependency mapping tools

McLean, VA and Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Management Summit, Orlando, FL, June 11, 2007‹ Managed Objects, the Business Service Management Company announced its Application Configuration Manager (ACM) a new one-of-a-kind solution designed specifically to go beyond traditional application dependency mapping tools by giving companies a faster, easier, and automated way to map and manage the relationships, dependencies, and configurations associated with today¹s custom, home-grown enterprise business applications.

Home-grown business applications comprise up to 90% of the total application inventory in many of today¹s large enterprises, which depend upon these applications to create competitive differentiation, develop new sales opportunities, and drive top-line revenue.  And yet, without expensive, custom-built ³fingerprints², most of today¹s application discovery tools are blind to home-grown business applications.  As such, traditional application dependency maps provide an incomplete picture of the IT enterprise, leaving IT operations essentially ³in-the-dark² when trying to evaluate the impact of proposed application changes.

³Without a comprehensive understanding of the IT infrastructure, companies will continue to face significant risks to the business when implementing application changes,² said Ronni Colville of Gartner Research.  ³As companies implement their Configuration Management Database (CMDB) strategy, information about home-grown applications is critical to building out a comprehensive (or complete) IT Service view.²

Compounding this situation, today¹s home-grown enterprise applications are highly subject to change in many cases, over 115 times a week, according to the results from a survey of more than 200 U.S. senior corporate executives and IT managers to be released this month by Managed Objects[i] <#_edn1> .  With so many changes happening, it¹s no surprise that 61% of survey respondents reported that most IT outages were cause by software applications.  Even more alarming, companies reported that IT outages cost them an average of more than $10,000 per hour over the last year.

³Not only are applications changing frequently, but they¹re also getting much more complex especially with the rapid growth of new application architectures such as SOA and web services,² said Siki Giunta, President and CEO of Managed Objects. To keep pace with this growing complexity and rate of change, companies need a solution like ACM that automatically gathers and reconciles the components and dependencies of today¹s home-grown applications -- providing a complete genetic map of critical application configurations from which IT can accurately understand the impact of potential changes before they¹re implemented in production.²

Home-grown applications represent the final frontier for application dependency mapping. What¹s missing from today¹s application discovery tools is an easy and inexpensive way to map the relationships and dependencies of home-grown business applications.  Lacking this, discovery vendors create custom-tailored fingerprints to find and map home-grown application data often at tremendous cost and expense to the customer.

Managed Objects ACM leverages innovative technology to collect information about home-grown business applications from a variety of existing configuration data sources. Gathered data is normalized and correlated to form a complete genetic map of an application¹s configuration. Once assembled, this map becomes a critical input into the Managed Objects Server, allowing it to monitor and report on changes to any custom application in real-time.

In addition, because ACM is an integral part of the Managed Objects platform, application configuration data from ACM can be used in conjunction with traditional discovery and event management data to formulate a complete application availability or end-user performance picture ACM data can even be directly input into a corporate CMDB  including Managed Objects¹ own CMDB360.

³Managed Objects ACM provides a perfect complement to any new or existing application mapping project,² said Giunta.  ³One of Managed Objects¹ core strengths lies in its ability to integrate and correlate ACM with virtually any other traditional discovery data.  In doing this, IT organizations not only get a more complete picture of their critical business applications they gain the ability to more accurately manage the changes they make to their overall IT infrastructure as well.²
