Travel Guard Achieves Business-IT Alisgnment With Borland IT Management & Governance Solution |
|
DEDICATES 90% OF DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES TO
STRATEGIC PROJECTS
Borland Tempo(TM) Helps Travel Company Shift IT Resource Allocation From Reactive Maintenance to Strategic Business Innovation
CUPERTINO,
Calif.--November 27, 2006--Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ:BORL),
the global leader for Software Delivery Optimization (SDO), announced
today that Travel Guard International (www.travelguard.com), the
industry's leading provider of travel insurance and emergency travel
assistance, is using Borland's IT Management & Governance
(ITM&G) solution to automate its governance processes and make IT
more efficient and predictable. Using Borland Tempo(TM), Travel Guard
was able to reallocate its development time and resources so that about
90% of the team's effort is now spent on strategic projects, rather
than on maintenance.
With the majority of its sales generated via the Internet, IT is critical to Travel Guard's high-flying success. Without an adequate IT management and governance process in place to meet the growing demand for IT services, Travel Guard's development team was bogged down in maintaining existing software applications and spending up to 90% of its time on small enhancements rather than on projects that would drive competitive advantage and deliver high value to the business. Travel Guard selected Borland Tempo, the cornerstone of the Borland ITM&G solution, to automate a complete project and portfolio management (PPM) process that would address three critical areas-portfolio management, scheduling and time tracking.
"After an extensive evaluation of competing IT governance and PPM solutions, we chose Borland Tempo for its strong Demand and Portfolio Management and Project and Resource Management capabilities," said Tim Norton, manager of Travel Guard's Project Management Office (PMO). "Borland has helped us gain visibility into our project portfolio so that we have more control, predictability and efficiency in our software delivery process. This means we can accurately determine that we are working on the highest-value projects, getting the most from our resources and exceeding the expectations of the business and our customers."
Before implementing Borland Tempo, managing demand for Travel Guard's IT resources was a challenging, manual process involving more than 100 projects and requests tracked via spreadsheets. This cumbersome and inefficient system made it virtually impossible for Travel Guard to prioritize projects. A host of potential projects that would provide great benefit to the company were left uninitiated as IT resources were sapped "putting out fires" and developing "quick fixes" that Travel Guard was powerless to prioritize.
Today, Travel Guard has gained control of its request management process. It now relies on an automated review process that categorizes all project requests by estimated scope and number of work hours. Borland Tempo allows Travel Guard to determine which projects take priority based on strategic value, impact on the business and resource availability. In addition, Travel Guard has gained resource management capabilities, including a repository for all scheduling activities and timesheet tracking for actual time spent. This helps Travel Guard understand at an enterprise, team, and individual level who is working on what projects and what the capacity is for proposed projects.
"Traditionally, scheduling has been very difficult for us because of our limited request process and time tracking capabilities," explained Jason Schilling, senior software architect at Travel Guard. "Borland Tempo has enabled our developers to be more productive. We can now manage all of the necessary small projects, while effectively allocating more time for strategic projects that will ultimately reduce the number of requests and save teams time and effort in the long run."
Travel Guard is also leveraging Borland SilkTest®, the leading automated tool for testing the functionality of enterprise software applications in any environment, for automated functional software testing.
