Day 1: Down to work... PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 October 2006
I'm feeling very virtuous today. Got up early, cleared up some paperwork, breakfast, and made a pot of fresh coffee. Life is good!

What more could you want from life? Fresh coffee in the corner, fresh fruit on the side, master of your own destiny. Coming and going as you please, no-one hassling you for the "latest release", "What was in release 15 of product XYZ", "How do I....?", Bliss!

So, with this new freedom comes new responsibility! Well, kinda. Time to knuckle down to some serious writing.

I'll focus on the first part of the book, since this lays the foundation for the later parts. So, Part I: Art, Theory, and Philosophy. I'll start, as I always start writing anything, by simply dumping whatever comes to mind onto the page. No regard for order, neatness, or clarity. Just get it all on the page somehow.

Once this "mind dump" is completed I'll start to refine each chapter into some semblence of order. Then refine my thoughts to focus them so that the reader does not get lost in my ramblings. Then down to the final edit.

During each of these phases I will be throwing bits-and-pieces out onto the web. Some in this blog, some in the discussion forums (fora?), and some on my website at http://www.principia-it.co.uk.

To be fair to everyone I will follow a couple of conventions when posting outside this blog.
  • When posting to the forums I'll add "SAR:" to the start of the post title. ("SAR" - Some Assembly Required, get it?) So people can avoid or join the conversation as they please.
  • When I put material on the website I will mark it with a "Maturity" level to show how far through the process the item is. So, for initial thoughts I'll mark them something like "Initial Thoughts", for more complete items I'll put something like "Draft" and for finalised pieces I'll put a "Release" marker. Well, something like that.
In order to start the basic structure of Part I I'll work to the following rough-cut chapter headings (presented in no particular order and very much subject to change):
  • Objectives
  • History
  • Control versus Monitoring
  • How far do we go?
  • Legal
  • Fundamentals
  • Terminology
  • Interfaces to other processes
  • Going global
  • Defining processes
  • Identification
  • Verisoning
  • Configuration
  • CMDB
  • Disposition
  • Organisation
  • Management information systems
  • Forensic CM
  • Standards, frameworks, and guidelines
  • Change
  • Metrics
  • Virtualisation
  • Research
As always I welcome any comments, questions, requests, or feedback.
