If you need something doing...
Thursday, 21 June 2007

They say that if you need something doing, give it to a busy man. (Of course they also say that if you need something doing, do it yourself.)

Well, taking both pieces of advice to heart I've taken on another 'little job'.

Broadened horizons...
Wednesday, 30 May 2007

As you may have noticed I've not posted very much this year. This is actually good news (for me) I'm just too busy to post. Anyway, I finally found a few minutes so I'll bring you up to date and provide a few bits of information you may (or may not) be interested in.

So where have I been?
Saturday, 03 March 2007
Very briefly, I continued work on the book until early January. Then I took  a break. Now I'm working with a client, and this looks like taking up most of my time for a few months (hey, I have to pay the bill somehow). In May I start studying for a Master's degree, so I'm guessing that will take up any remaining spare time,

Will the book continue?

Epiphany? Or dumb idea?
Wednesday, 06 December 2006
With a few hundred pages under my belt I've become a bit jaundiced with the book.

It's not that the book is bad. It's not even that the book has nothing new to say (I really believe it  does). I'm just not getting a warm vibe. It's starting to look like every other book on configuration management and those books have already been written. I wanted a new perspective. What to do, what to do?

Well, today I started messing with an idea for my new web site and while doing this I had an epiphany (or maybe it's a dumb idea). I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Emergency Fix Process
Tuesday, 05 December 2006
This post was originally a response to a forum discussion. I felt obliged to cut it down for the forum but have posted it in full here.

For those of you that have not been following the thread, the original post asked about the form Emergency Fix processes should take (and Billy Langston responded most thoroughly). The suggestion was made by Joe Townsend that all Emergency Fixes originated from bad planning...

Software Configuration Confusion
Monday, 04 December 2006
I often find that people confuse a software's configuration with the software itself. I believe this is because we are not disciplined enough in our use of terminology.

What I've learned so far...
Tuesday, 31 October 2006
I've taken a few days off to spend time with my son (it was half-term last week), but I feel I owe you something. So here is something.

Update
Wednesday, 11 October 2006
It has been 9 days (how time flies) since my last posting, so I thought an update was in order.

As I promised this post is partly about the writing process, partly about what I've been writing.
