Quality.
Applehood.
Mother Pie.
Hot Dogs, Baseball, and BMW.
Sure, we agree that Quality is one of those "good" things (for some definitions of the word "good"). No politician would legislate against it. Every executive sees it as being important to the company's success. We all want to achieve it. And we *certainly* want it to be a defining characteristic of that toy we just bought! |

Quality. Applehood. But I want to get away from "Quality" as a good concept and a noble target and an unfulfilled desire. I want to talk about what's really important. I LIVE IN THE *REAL* WORLD! HOW THE @!#&%@$! DO I MAKE IT HAPPEN? If achieving a high-quality result was as easy as achieving motherhood (and if the actions required had intrinsic rewards that drove us to engage in them repeatedly -- like those that result in motherhood), then we wouldn't be worried about finding the Road To Quality. In fact, as with motherhood, we would be taking precautions to avoid high-quality in the cases where we didn't want that result. Picture *that* world! In our world, Quality doesn't result from doing what comes naturally. We have to work at it. But we have only so much effort and attention that we can invest. How do we make it pay off? |
