RFG believes enterprises spend significant effort managing the upgrades and major releases of software applications and infrastructure elements, both commercially and internally developed. Policies with predefined schedules can make such management easier, but must reflect the varying platforms and application profiles typical in most enterprises. IT executives should evaluate software release management practices to determine the issues they engender. They should then work together with line of business executives to evaluate impact of software upgrades on business processes, and design and implement policies and procedures that reduce interruption to the business while providing new and valuable functionality.
