chronic lymphocytic leukemia patientsTitle: Build Forensics – linking production to development When an application failure occurs, developers rush in to investigate the problem. Like crime scene investigators they search build logs, run debuggers and view error reports trying to find the root cause of the problem. However, without the DNA and fingerprints that link the binaries to the source, their efforts are often reduced to guess work. The evidence is only circumstantial. The use of an SCM tool to create the link is only as accurate as the ad hoc scripts that built the binaries. It is not unusual for the build scripts to reference source and library directories outside of the SCM tool leaving many unanswered questions. Build forensics is what is needed to establish the evidence that links the production executable back to the managed source. This information is the only way that production executables can be matched to their original source. This article will explain why it is difficult to achieve this level of traceability between production and development and explain the concept of "build forensics." Bio: Tracy RaganChief Operations Officer - Co-Founder OpenMake SoftwareMs. Ragan has had extensive experience in the development and implementation of business applications. She began her consulting career in 1989 consulting to fortune 500 organizations in the areas of testing, configuration management and build management. It was during her consulting experiences that Ms. Ragan recognized the lack of build management procedures for the distributed platform that had long been considered standard on the mainframe. In the four years leading to the creation of OpenMake Software she worked with development teams in implementing a team-centric standardized build management process. Ms. Ragan received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from California Polytechnic University, Pomona, CA.Any questions, please contact
