Product versus Project - Where to Focus Your Efforts Volume 7 - Number 3 - March 2009 This month's topic of Product vs Project CM addresses the challenges of taking a Project oriented view of CM versus considering the wider Product perspective. I have faced these challenges, from the trenches, many times and always struggled with the tough choices involved. Ben Weatherall takes the lead as he helps us see Big Picture or Little Picture – Where to Focus while Andrew T. Madejczyk discusses Product versus Project - Where to Focus Your Efforts. I share my own challenges and choices about Product vs Project in Behaviorally Speaking. Steve Berczuk, Robert Cowham, Brad Appleton focus exclusively on the product(s) side with their Beware the IDEs: The Risks of Standardizing on IDEs. But that doesn't come close to my review of an excellent and well known Product called Perforce! Make sure that you check out this review of a product that boasts some of the most satisfied users of any SCM tool - I went out and asked them!
We take a look back at Mario Moreira's view of Business Criticality and the Investment of CM (where CM adds value to the product line and Joe Farah's Project vs Product using Dashboards. Whatever your CM challenges you have come to the right place for the best focus from both a project and a product view!

Beware the IDEs: The Risks of Standardizing on IDEs by Steve Berczuk, Robert Cowham, Brad Appleton Beware the ides of March (Shakespeare Julius Caesar Act 1, Scene 2) Beware the IDEs... -Steve, Brad, and Robert Individuals and Interactions over Processes and Tools -- The Agile Manifesto Two topics that are likely to launch a development team into an impassioned discussion are development standards and development environments (IDEs, editors, etc). Combining the two topics into that of standardizing on development environments, is even more likely to spark debate. Read More >> |

Madejczyk Friends, by now we’ve all heard the predictions heralding the return of prudence in spending, optimization, needs-versus-wants and the underlying theme of rethinking everything imaginable. Thus, the focus of our effort seems to have an interwoven connection to the care and due diligence we employ as we chart our efforts and manage our expenditures. Read More >> |

CM: THE NEXT GENERATION - Project vs Product SCM Using Dashboards by Joe Farah A CM strategy must deal with product development from both a Product and from a Project perspective. The former deals with the state of a product, the requirements, features, problems, quality, etc. The latter deals with managing the tasks that will take the product through its many milestones. Dashboard technology can help to clarify the perspectives and simplify the management functions, especially from an information perspective. Read More >> |

Business Criticality and the Investment of CM by Mario Moreira Configuration Management (CM) provides organizations with a level of control over the changes that occur in the engineering space. It can help protect the valuable code assets of the revenue generating products within the organization. CM provides the capability for products to manage the pieces therein that change at different rates, exposes the changes that are occurring, and establishes knowledge of the baseline of the product which then improves integrity and minimizes product regression. In addition, CM not only assesses the impact of change, but assists in problem resolution. Read More >> |

Perforce Provides Source Code Management to Improve Developer Productivity by Bob Aiello Perforce is a popular source code management tool that has been around since 1995. I have never had an opportunity to work with Perforce, but I have always been keenly aware that the Perforce users are among the most loyal and many are devout in their support and love of this product. For this review, I took a look at the features and usage of Perforce myself and was definitely impressed with what I saw. Perforce is a relatively inexpensive product, but quite rich in features and the vendor, Perforce Software, Inc., is obviously very responsive to their customer base. Read More >>
