The RightScale Development and Test Solution Pack gives development teams an easy on-ramp to cloud computing. In this interview with Patrick Egan, Michael Crandell, CEO of RightScale discussed how using the cloud management platform for software development and testing, organizations can achieve greater agility for their development teams with virtually no long-term commitment or risk, and at the same time learn more about cloud computing.

They found that, based on customer surveys, the second most requested type of usage for cloud computing is development and testing resources. This is a great on-ramp for organizations to start using cloud resources that are not ready to deploy production services to the cloud. Most importantly cloud driven development solves a real business problem by giving agility back to the developer by making it easier to allocate resources, duplicate assets and get to market quicker.

What this solution pack really does for the end user is to ensure a completely repeatable and scalable process for replicating a known configuration, beginning with a single server environment through multi-server testing and on to a scalable production platform. It makes sure that the configuration of the software and hardware assists are identical in each instance.

RightScale has also just received a new round of funding which they will be using to drive three core initiatives in the coming year.

First, they plan to reinvest in the state of the art core platform. Second will be geographical expansion globally to support Cloud providers such as Amazon, Fujitsu Rackspace and others. Finally, they will support an array of partners ranging from ISV partners, who want to publish their own software on a portable platform that allows their customers to choose the infrastructure they want to run on, to system integration partners whose customers continually ask "help us get onto the cloud."
