How many times have you heard
this: "The build worked fine on my machine, I don't know why the integration
build didn't work." Or the desperate email from the build engineer at 4:30 that
pleads "we need to get everyone's source code checked in and all of the
libraries synced up by 6:00 pm so we can run a final build overnight."
These situations, and many
more like them, are the result of decentralized build and release management
practices. And to make matters worse, they are the norm. Most companies today
have very decentralized, uncontrolled policies and practices in place to manage
the build and release process. So while organizations have invested
substantially in source code configuration management systems and automated
testing systems, the bridge between them has largely been left to manual and
ad-hoc practices.

Developers
Developer self-service. Immediate feedback. Product Quality. Build Forge makes it easy for developers to run builds faster, more often. And you can run your own builds right from your Eclipse, or .NET IDE before you check-in to source control. You don’t have to leave your work environment to use all the same processes as your CM’s. If the code works, you can do a full test against production systems on your own. And if there’s an error, Build Forge sends you an error log so that you can fix x the problem right then. With Build Forge, source adaptors do all the work monitoring systems like Clear Case, Star Team and Perforce – if there’s new code, it automatically triggers a code-build-test cycle. It also has a great option that includes dependency managers for ANT, Make and .Net that break your scripts down automatically– no changes required. Then the work is distributed out to Build Forge servers to run in parallel. That’s making builds go faster and your life easier.
Build Forge enables you to check in with confidence - you no longer have to worry about being the guy who broke the build.

| IBM Rational Build Forge provides a flexible build and
release management framework that turns disconnected tools and scripts
into a cohesive, integrated, production build and release process. As a
result, teams are able to collaborate more effectively, create highly
scalable build operations, and manage compliance requirements. IBM
Rational Build Forge centralizes, automates, and documents the entire
build and release process - eliminating manual tasks and human handoffs
that lead to build errors, schedule slips, and divisive finger
pointing. It integrates with version control, test, and defect tracking
systems to provide complete documentation and traceability to answer
critical questions such as "what changed from the previous version",
"who made changes and why", and, "what defects were resolved" for each
release.

| Integration:
A Key IBM Rational Build Forge Difference
Software development
organizations need solutions that are flexible, easy to use, and integrate
quickly, while still providing standardization and automation of repetitive
processes. IBM Rational Build Forge was designed to leverage your existing
development processes and tools while providing a framework to help you manage
builds efficiently.

Overview:
- IBM®
Rational® Build ForgeTM Adaptor Toolkit allows users of third party
software such as source code managers, defect tracking and test mangers
create seamless links between their software configuration management and
build environments for increased efficiency and tracking of source code,
defect and test changes.
- Out of the
box adaptors are available for CVS, Perforce® SCM, Borland®
StarTeam®, Microsoft® Visual Source Safe®, Bugzilla® and Subversion.
You can modify these adaptors or create your own for homegrown or other
third party software development tools. Adaptors for Rational ClearCase
and Rational ClearQuest are provided out-of-the-box with the IBM Rational
Build Forge Standard Edition and IBM Rational Build Forge Enterprise
Edition.
- Provide
continuous monitoring of the third party source repository, and executes
builds automatically when a change occurs
- Monitors
source changes and gathers metrics to provide detailed repository state
tracking for each build
- Using the
IBM Rational Build Forge management console, you can see where changes
occurred - from submission comments to actual file differences - on a per
build basis
- Allows you
to correlate source code changes, defects and tests with specific builds
for a detailed understanding of the build components
- Captures
key build statistics - including changes made, build time and date, and
more - and stores this information in a central location for quick access

Extend the build and release process to the developer's desktop
When your developer and CM processes become silo'd, software quality, team
productivity and time-to-delivery are undermined. Developers avoid check-in's
for fear they'll break the build. Unpredictable errors can surface further
downstream in the software lifecycle resulting in finger pointing, last-minute
fire fighting, and schedule slips. What's more, development progress - or the
lack of it - is directly tied to the bandwidth of the CM team to run builds,
identify errors, and provide results. And then, there's the time it takes for
compiling. Long builds stall the entire process while teams sit idle waiting
for feedback.
|
| IBM®
Rational® Build ForgeTM Enterprise Edition automates your software delivery
processes through an adaptive build and release management framework that
helps development teams standardize repetitive tasks, manage compliance
mandates, and share information. The system supports distributed
development teams through a centralized web interface - accessible
virtually anytime, anywhere.
