FAQ: Is there a VCS you would recommend?
Terminology mess disclaimer: what do you mean by a
VCS?
Some replies given in part from
comp.software.config-mgmt:
- People tend to recommend subversion. I take it that is is robust enough, widely used, available across many platforms. I believe all these reasons make it only more critical to get it out of the way since it prevents the emergence of a real Open Source SCM tool which is badly needed.
- There is quite a universal agreement to avoid Visual Source Safe
- There is no reason to limit oneself to using a VCS : get support for information and collaboration management, not only for source control
- I'd still recommend base ClearCase, although it is obviously a dying product. Avoid UCM.
- There were some voices in favour of Perforce and of Vesta
What this shows is that there is no reasonable answer to this kind of question: one has to negociate a context.
