The OSI model of ISO for Network Management defined five so-called functional areas, merely for analysis purposes, even if these ended up structuring virtually every product which pretended to implement it. They were known by their initials, the FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security).

One of these areas, capitalizing on a long tradition in the pre-software industry, was thus Configuration Management.
