clearmake can be seen as the gem of (base) ClearCase, the key to the conceptual integrity of the original design. It is to date without real competition (with the possible exception, sometimes mentioned, but still not free from possible controversy, of the build system of Vesta) , in the category of offering management for arbitrary files, seen as derived objects.
