Build Management
Automated, repeatable procedures that speed the build process, improve build accuracy and make it easier to create and maintain multiple
versions of an application.
Build Management can be considered like a special case of
Derived Object Management (not all DOs result from a build), i.e. of management of
High-level configuration items (if first level CIs are the versioned elements). This management requires
sharing the derived objects, and thus some kind of
Build Avoidance (
ClearCase terminology).

Build
The code files,
compilers, development tools and other components needed to create an application. An official product build or official build is one which depends only on source files that have been checked into the source library, and which promotes the products deliverables into the project directory. Official builds never include any local or unofficial components.
Configuration.
A product build that includes all the files,
objects, components, and other deliverables, of the correct revision number, needed to create an executable application
release.
